Back again with mOrders

    I am still frustrated with mOrders. I used it successfully, literally for years. Then it quit downloading new orders. When I click on download, it simply does nothing. So, I tried repairing it, but that did not help. So I uninstalled it and then reinstalled it, which also did not help, but I did lose my entire database of customers over the last many years.

    I figured that it is my old computer, so I bought a new computer. I have the same problem with mOrders on this new computer.

    If I uninstall it and reinstall it, it works for a day or so. If I try to archive the orders, it locks up again.

    I have a couple of questions.
    1) I click "backup now" and had assumed that it was backing up my database of customer. Sadly, although it says that it is putting it in the db/backup folder, there is nothing there. Then when I try to restore last back up, the entire pane goes blank and I have lost my database entirely. It says under Preferences that the Active database is the default called mOrders.tdbd but that is not so. It is obviously not there.

    When I try to copy the main database. it is not there. I.e. the file mOrdes.tdbd has never changed from the one that was there when the program was downloaded. Where is the database kept? It must be somewhere, since it kept track of things for years, including the archived orders.

    How do I back up the database? In Preferences, the database backup directory is the folder called backup just as comes by default. But there is nothing there.

    Anyway, for some reason my mOrders is not stable. I can reinstall it, and download the last three months of orders, but cannot archive or I lose it all.

    I sure hope that somebody has some insight.

    I can't answer your questions but could it be your firewall or virus protection causing the problems? Try turning them off and testing it to see.

    Hi Francie,

    We had a similar problem with MOrders during (I think) 2014. Overnight MOrders, which had been reliable for the previous 6 years, suddenly would not download orders.
    Turned out that this was due to some setting Mal had to change in the admin to keep it up to date and secure. The unforeseen problem though was that any installations of MOrders on Windows XP would no longer talk to the admin server.

    So we went out and bought a new PC running windows 10 which has been ok.

    We did have a blip a few months ago when the database became corrupt but we managed to re-install it ok.

    We have never used the archive feature built into MOrders – we just take regular copies of the database file as a separate backup. As a result, MOrders lists every order taken since 2009 which is handy for searching customer histories etc.

    Don’t you have copies of old versions of the database on your system backups (you do regular backups right ?) .

    Re-installing the database is a bit hit and miss in our experience – we have a operate PC that also runs Windows 10 and no matter how we try, we can’t get it to run properly on that machine even when all settings etc look identical.

    I agree with you regarding the database file not looking as though it has updated, even when new orders have been downloaded and the program has been closed and re-opened – bit of a mystery why this is but the new data is retained.

    If you search the forum history you should find a thread from August 2013 which was started by someone having similar problems – there is a post from me included which lists a routine for re-installing the database which worked for us. Might be worth a try,

    This finally gives me a bit of hope, Ian. I am going to contact Ian again to see if he might be able to help with the problem. I am still reinstalling the program almost daily, but I lose all of my notes of what I did with the orders, sigh.

    However, in struggling with this, I have finally worked out how to use the automatic emails from mOrders and will start a new thread so that it can be found by others in case they need the info.
