PayPal orders not coming through

My web site form connects to Mal's cart, which takes payment through Paypal, connects back to Mal's, which emails an order copy and does an html call to my PHP script which emails the download link to the customer (and to me). At least it used to.

Now all that happens is that I get a Paypal receipt. Nothing else works and if I set Mal's error reporting for the html call, no report is generated.

I haven't changed anything so I don't know where to begin with this. It seems to me that Paypal is not returning the transaction to Mal's site.

Payment status is listed as "unknown". This occurred on 9th August then corrected, then failed again on 18th August, OK on 19th for two of the three transactions then OK on 20th August for one of the four transactions. Since then it hasn't worked at all.

    Hi Martin,

I would strongly recommend you switch to using PayPal Express checkout if you need to return the customer back to the cart after paying.  It has never worked well with PayPal Standard and, as you have observed, has become particularly unreliable over the summer.

Hi, Mal. I have no idea how to do that.

Here are the instructions I followed in the past:-
After logging in click on the cog wheel "Profile" in the menu bar. .
Click on Summary (left side of menu bar).
Scroll down (left column) to Selling Tools
    Click on Seller Preferences
At Website preferences click on Update
    Set Auto return: ON
    Set Return URL:
Set Payment Data Transfer (optional) OFF
Set "Encrypted Website Payments" Payment: Off
Set PayPal Account Optional to Off
Set Contact Telephone Number to Off
Set "PayPal Express Checkout Settings" transfer payments: NO
    Click SAVE

Now, on that last point I have changed it to YES and clicked on the Test button.
That results in an error message as follows:
    The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.

Simply change to PayPal Express as Mal has suggested...

PayPal offers a number of different payment services, click here for more information:

    Don't use PayPal
    Use PayPal Payments Standard
Use PayPal Payments Advanced - Premium accounts only
Use PayPal Payments Pro - Premium accounts only
    Use Express Checkout

Having trouble with a form or need one building?
Fast turnaround, but I do charge :)

Mal's Forms / Scripts and the syntax are here.

It is an option in the cart setup.

Ah, apologies! I assumed it was on the Paypal site.

OK, I've selected "Use Express Checkout" in your Cart setup.
I've followed your instructions (right hand column on that page) to change my Paypal account to grant API access.

What selection must I use for "Express checkout placement", please?

Sorry to be a pain but, hey, I'm 65 !
