I've been a Mals customer for 10+ years but have been putting off setting up the shipping calculator in the cart. I have a blurb in the cart stating the estimated cost of shipping but state shipping will be added once we receive the order. I always charge under the actual cost of shipping so there is no question about over charging. The reason for the delay in fixing it is each way I look at charging I can see the client will be over or under charged on orders. I don't want the cart to be abandon when it's showing an over charge and don't want to loose on the under charged. Is there anyone experienced that I can pay to see if I can find a win, win situation for my cart? I'm new to the Mals forum so I can give someone our phone number and pay with Paypal? I'm in the U.S.. My shipping calculation is going to be complex or I would have been able to do one of the simple weight or per part calculations. Please help me end this 10 year shipping nightmare. Rich

Maybe you could give us an idea of the products you are shipping and what you see as the complexities.

Where do I start. I have 3 different weights of parts I sell. 8lb parts are $15 for shipping, 4lb parts are $10 for shipping, 1lb parts are $3 for shipping and parts that have a good margin are free shipping. There are so many intermixing of these parts scenarios is the problem. If someone orders a part that costs $15 to ship and it's the only part they order that's easy, the cart adds $15 to the total and we're all good. But if someone orders a part that costs $15 to ship plus a part that costs $3 to ship it will total $18 for shipping in the cart but being I can put the $3 for shipping part in with the $15 for shipping part I would want only $15 charged for shipping. I would get questions from clients saying why the $3 for shipping part can't go in with the $15 for shipping part. I've been doing this for 20 years and believe me they do complain. I always under charge a bit for shipping as if they complain they will see they never pay full shipping. The parts I charge $15 for shipping are actually $17 ish, the $10 for shipping parts are $12 ish and so on. I'm really down to if 1 part of any number of parts put in the cart costs $15 then that's all I want charged on the entire order is $15 no mater how big the order is. It would be free shipping for all other parts on the order. And if someone orders 3 parts that cost $3 shipping for each I want only 1 charge for $3 shipping, not $3 x 3 or $9 for shipping. I have not done it yet but I will have no problem putting the code on each page telling the cart what shipping amount to put in the cart, the problem is telling the cart which of the shipping costs to total in the cart. All cannot be totaled in the cart or shipping will show to high and I will loose lots of sales. So in conclusion, what I need is if 5 $3 for shipping parts are put in the cart only $3 for shipping is charged total. If 5 $10 for shipping parts are put into the cart then $10 total for shipping is charged. If there is a $15 for shipping part put into the cart along with a $3 and a $10 for shipping part then the $3 and $10 for shipping parts get thrown out and $15 for shipping total is charged for the whole order. If there is a free shipping part in the cart then everything put into the cart is free shipping. This is what I am currently doing manually after I get the orders. Both my clients and I feel this is a fair price to pay for shipping. I am willing to pay several hundred dollars to get this to automatically work in the cart if special coding is needed. Thanks for any light you can shine on this. Rich

What volumes are we talking about? Might someone buy more than 9 of a $3 shipping item, or a $10 item etc.?

For example, consider giving free shipping items a units value of 1000, $15 items a units value of 100, $10 items 10, $3 items 1. If not more than 9 of any classification will be in an order then

    Using option 7
    UNITS COST
    9 ____ 3 ____ up to 9 units will cost 3
    90 ___ 7 ____ units total 10-99 cost 10
    900 __ 5 ____ units total 100-999 cost 15
    1000 _ -15 __ units total over 1000 is free

If any volume might be up to 99 you could change the units values from 1, 10, 100, 1000 to 1, 100, 10000, 1000000 but would need an option 8 user routine because values in the units column have a four character maximum. (It may be possible with advanced shipping - I haven't checked maximum values allowed).

It looks as though the maximum UNITS value in Advanced shipping tables may be 6 characters, 999999, so using units values of 1, 100, 10000, 1000000 you could try

    based on the units total
The first 99 units are charged 3 the band
The next 9900 units are charged 7 the band
The next 990000 units are charged 5 the band
The rest units are charged -15 the band.

You may prefer 3, 9, 5, -17 to be closer to your actual costs.

    Other thoughts.

Change the units value for 'free shipping' items to 0 and only they would be free.

You can have 28 bands in an Advanced shipping table, so can add intermediate entries. For example, if thirty $3 items push the actual shipping cost up to $5, the table in my last post could become

The first 29 units are charged 3 the band
The next 70 units are charged 2 the band
The next 9900 units are charged 5 the band
The next 990000 units are charged 5 the band
The rest units are charged -15 the band.

This retains the idea that the shipping cost is based only on the most expensive items to ship, ignoring cheaper items, but moves charges nearer to reality.

Alan, orders are 1 to 5 items at the most. Maybe 2 $3 shipping items and 3 $10 shipping items that I would want to total to $10 shipping total. Are you in the U.S. that I could talk to you? I would be willing to call overseas. What your saying is over my head but I'm sure it would take a second to get it quickly conveyed over a phone conversation. Can I get you my phone number or get yours in the private message area? Rich
