Shipping Units Confusion

I can't quite grasp how to set up shipping costs based on units. I want to end up with the following shipping prices:
US Expedited: $16 per item, $6 for each additional item
US Express: $22 per item, $6 for each additional item
Should I be using the "based on the total sum of units posted in with your products" in the advanced shipping setup? If so, what values do I need to pass to the shopping cart and further enter in the "The first __ units are charged __ each"?

If there are no exceptions (such as items to be shipped free) then there's no requirement to specify units values as the item count performs that function for you.

You can use option 4 of standard shipping or 'Based on the number of items' using Advanced shipping.

Standard shipping option 4 with 2 zones. The COST column has multipliers.

    US expedited
    UNITS COST
    1 ____ 16 _______ charge 16 for the first item
rest __ 6 ________ and 6 each for any others

    US Express
    UNITS COST
    1 ___ 22
    rest _ 6

Using advanced shipping you could have one zone with two options 'based on the total number of items'. The syntax is slightly different. For example

The first 1 costs 16 each
    The rest cost 6 each

Sorry, I should have clarified. We have two product types with different shipping rates - one is $16, the other is $15. Also, we have a second Canadian shopping cart that has yet another set of shipping rates.

I think you are saying that if product A is purchased, shipping is 16 for the first and 6 for each additional whereas if it is product B it is 15 and then 6.

If it is one of each do you charge 21 22 or 31?

If the cart is working with an item count it can't tell one product from another.

If it working with units values it doesn't know how many items there are.

I'd be inclined to settle for 15.50.
